Magnesium
Here you will find food supplements with magnesium as the main active ingredient: magnesium-only products as well as combinations with vitamin B6, calcium, potassium, zinc or vitamin D3. The range includes tablets, capsules, liquid magnesium and powder in sachets. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function and to normal functioning of the nervous system.
Use the “Magnesium compound” filter to choose products by compound: glycinate/bisglycinate, citrate, malate, taurate, oxide and more. The product details show the amount of magnesium per daily dose and the number of daily doses per pack (where the manufacturer has published this information), which makes products easy to compare.
How to choose magnesium
- Compare the amount of magnesium, not the weight of the compound. Labels often give two figures: for example, 665 mg of magnesium bisglycinate contains 133 mg of magnesium. Check how much magnesium the daily dose provides. The nutrient reference value (NRV) for adults is 375 mg.
- Choose a compound. Magnesium compounds differ in what the magnesium is bound to. The table below gives an overview.
- Work out how long a pack will last. If the daily dose is 3 capsules, a pack of 90 capsules lasts 30 days. The number of daily doses also lets you compare the price per day.
- Pick a convenient format. Tablets and capsules are easy to carry with you, a liquid dose is easy to measure, and powder from a sachet is simply poured into the mouth to dissolve.
Magnesium compounds
| Compound | What the magnesium is bound to | Examples from our range |
|---|---|---|
| Glycinate / bisglycinate | the amino acid glycine (chelate) | VitalHarmony Magnesium Bisglycinate, Swanson Magnesium Glycinate, HERBIN Magnesium Bisglycinate |
| Citrate | citric acid | VitalHarmony Magnesium Citrate, OstroVit Magnesium Citrate + B6 |
| Malate | malic acid | Swanson Magnesium Malate |
| Taurate | the amino acid taurine | Swanson Magnesium Taurate |
| Oxide | oxygen; the highest share of magnesium by weight | VITAR Magnesium Forte |
| Hydroxide (marine magnesium) | hydroxide groups; obtained from seawater | HERBIN Marine Magnesium |
| Several compounds | – | HERBIN MG3 (malate, bisglycinate, citrate) |
The weight of the compound and the amount of magnesium are two different figures on the label. How much magnesium you get each day is shown by the amount of magnesium per daily dose stated on the pack.
You will find all magnesium glycinate products on the Magnesium glycinate page. Our guide How to choose magnesium explains how the compounds differ and how to read the label.
Liquid magnesium and powder
If you find tablets hard to swallow, choose liquid magnesium: VITATEKA Liquid Magnesium Bisglycinate, VITATEKA Calcium and Magnesium or FARMGRUPP Magnesium B6 Solution. There is also powder in sachets: MAXI VITA Magnesium with Vitamins B6 and C, which you pour into your mouth and let dissolve. For a liquid product, check how many millilitres make up the daily dose and how much magnesium it contains.
Magnesium combined with other nutrients
- Magnesium and vitamin B6 – the most common combination: ALG PHARMA Magnesium Chelate + B6, Magnez Gold B6, OstroVit Magnesium + B6 P-5-P.
- Potassium and magnesium: FARMGRUPP Cardio Potassium-Magnesium, OstroVit Magnesium Citrate + Potassium + B6.
- Magnesium and zinc: HERBIN Magnesium Bisglycinate with Zinc and Vitamin D3, OstroVit Magnesium, Zinc and B6.
- Calcium and magnesium: VITATEKA Calcium and Magnesium.
With combination products, check the amount of each active ingredient per daily dose separately. See also: Vitamins B group, Zinc, Vitamin D, Other minerals.
Frequently asked questions
Which magnesium is best?
There is no single best form. Start with the amount of magnesium per daily dose, then choose the compound, format and pack size that suit you. Glycinate and citrate are the most common organic compounds in supplements; oxide has the highest share of magnesium by weight.
How much magnesium per day?
The nutrient reference value (NRV) for adults is 375 mg a day, and this includes the magnesium you get from food. With a supplement, follow the recommended daily dose on the pack and do not exceed it.
What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate?
Both are organic salts: in glycinate the magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine, in citrate to citric acid. They contain a similar proportion of magnesium by weight, so what matters when comparing them is the amount of magnesium per daily dose.
Is liquid magnesium better than tablets?
A liquid is convenient if you do not like swallowing tablets, and the dose is easy to measure. The same rule applies when comparing: look at the amount of magnesium per daily dose.

What to check before use
Food supplements are not medicines and should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet. Before use, read the composition, the recommended daily dose and the directions on the pack. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication or have a chronic condition, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
