How to choose
- Look at the amount of zinc itself in the daily dose, not at the weight of the compound: for example, 54.5 mg of zinc bisglycinate provides 15 mg of zinc.
- Zinc compounds include gluconate, picolinate, bisglycinate, citrate and lactate; the label gives both the compound and the mg of zinc. Compare products by mg of zinc and % NRV (the NRV for zinc is 10 mg).
- Zinc is also found in complexes – with vitamins C and D, magnesium or collagen. If you take several supplements, add up the zinc from all of them: EFSA has set a tolerable upper intake level for adults of 25 mg of zinc a day, food included.
- Capsules and tablets are easy to dose; a liquid is measured with a spoon or the cap – the amount is given on the pack.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical supervision, consult a doctor before use.
