What it is
ICONFIT Organic Psyllium Husk Powder is a finely ground powder made from the seed husks of the Plantago ovata plant — better known as psyllium. This plant has been cultivated for centuries in India and the Middle East, where its husks have long been valued as a gentle source of soluble fibre. The 150 g pack from ICONFIT is certified organic, meaning the raw material is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
How it works
The way psyllium works is mostly mechanical, not chemical. Its husk is exceptionally rich in soluble fibre that, on contact with water, forms a soft gel. This gel passes through the digestive tract largely intact and performs several useful functions along the way:
- Adds volume to the stool — the gel holds water, which softens intestinal content and helps it move more smoothly.
- Slows down the absorption of sugars and fats — by forming a viscous layer in the small intestine, psyllium can make the post-meal rise in blood sugar more gradual.
- Feeds the gut microbiota — part of the fibre is fermented by beneficial bacteria in the colon, producing short-chain fatty acids that nourish the intestinal lining.
- Creates a feeling of fullness — the swelling effect in the stomach can help curb appetite between meals.
How to use it
The powdered form is convenient because it dissolves and disperses faster than whole husks. People typically stir a teaspoon into a large glass of water, plant milk, juice or a smoothie and drink it immediately, before it thickens. Psyllium is also a popular ingredient in gluten-free baking and low-carb recipes, where it acts as a natural binder and gives dough elasticity that would otherwise come from gluten. Vegans and people following keto, paleo or high-protein diets often use it to compensate for low fibre intake.
Important notes
- Always take with plenty of liquid — at least 200–300 ml per serving — otherwise the gel can swell too early and cause discomfort.
- Increase gradually — start with a small amount so the gut microbiota has time to adapt.
- Mind your medication — leave a gap of at least one to two hours between the dose and psyllium, since the gel can slow the absorption of active substances.
- Consult a doctor first — this applies to people with swallowing difficulties, intestinal narrowing or chronic digestive conditions.
This is a food product and not a substitute for a varied diet or medical treatment.

Customer Questions
Yes, the powdered form of psyllium husk is well-suited for baking, particularly in gluten-free, keto, paleo, or high-protein recipes where traditional wheat flour is not used. The soluble fibre in the powder absorbs water and forms a gel. When mixed into dough or batter, this gel acts as a natural binder, helping to hold ingredients together and giving the dough an elasticity that mimics the texture provided by gluten.
The soluble fibre in psyllium husk powder absorbs water rapidly to form a soft, bulky gel. This process is central to how it works in your digestive system. Taking it with at least 200–300 ml of water, juice, or plant milk ensures the gel forms with the right consistency in your stomach, allowing it to pass smoothly through your digestive tract.
If you're not used to a high-fibre diet, introducing psyllium husk gradually is key to giving your digestive system and gut microbiota time to adjust. A sudden, large increase in fibre can lead to temporary gas, bloating, or cramping.
