Crushed calamus root is one of the bitter herbs, and the way it is prepared affects how pronounced its taste and action are. According to the instructions, pour 1 glass of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of the root, cover with a lid, leave to infuse for 30 minutes and strain.
Calamus root contains bitter substances and essential oils that have an active effect on the digestive system. This makes it noticeably different from neutral herbal teas such as chamomile or linden. It is not used in case of hypersensitivity to calamus or individual intolerance.
Historically, calamus root was used quite widely in herbalism: in addition to infusions taken internally, it was used for rinsing the mouth and gargling.
