Who should not drink calamus infusion, and who should be particularly careful with it?

Calamus root contains bitter substances and essential oils that have an active effect on the digestive system. This makes it noticeably different from neutral herbal teas such as chamomile or linden. It is not used in case of hypersensitivity to calamus or individual intolerance.

Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if:

• you have high stomach acidity or are prone to heartburn — bitter substances further stimulate secretion, which may increase discomfort;
• you are pregnant or breastfeeding — calamus is not recommended during these periods;
• you take medicines on a regular basis, especially those that affect digestion or blood clotting;
• you are sensitive to aromatic essential-oil herbs in general, or if the infusion is intended for a child — children are given calamus only on a doctor’s advice.

If you are trying calamus for the first time, it is sensible to start with a small amount — half the usual serving — and watch how your body reacts over a few days. Unpleasant sensations (burning, heaviness, increased stomach discomfort) are a signal to stop taking it and consult a specialist.
