VITATEKA Fireweed Leaf Tea 100g is a pure, single-ingredient fermented fireweed leaf tea made from the leaves of fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium L. / Chamerion angustifolium), wild-harvested from the pristine Emelyanovskoje forest in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia, Russia. Fireweed — known as ivan-chai (Иван-чай) in Russia and "tulerohi" in Estonian — is a flowering herbaceous plant of the family Onagraceae, widespread across boreal forests, forest clearings and recently burned areas across Northern Europe, Siberia, Canada and other temperate-boreal regions. The leaves of fireweed have been fermented (processed in a manner analogous to the traditional fermentation of tea leaves) to develop a rich, complex, deep earthy-floral-honey flavour with characteristic warm, full-bodied character — quite distinct from the green, grassy taste of unfermented fireweed. Fireweed leaf tea has historically been known as "Koporye Tea" or "Russian Tea" — it was commercially cultivated and exported from the Koporye region near St. Petersburg in the 18th–19th centuries, prized across Europe before being eclipsed by Indian tea imports. "VITATEKA" Põdrakanepi lehtede tee is fermented fireweed leaf, also known as ivan-chai. Fermentation is a natural processing of the leaf that changes its taste, aroma and the colour of the brew: the drink becomes richer, mellower and more "tea-like" in character. This is why ivan-chai comes across differently from fresh or simply dried leaves.
The leaves in this pack are cut fairly coarsely, and whole-leaf tea usually opens up in the teapot gradually. As a result, the drink has a fuller taste and aroma than fine tea from tea bags. According to the label, put 2–3 teaspoons of tea into a teapot, pour over 500 ml of boiling water and leave to steep for 5–7 minutes so that the taste and aroma have time to develop fully; let the drink cool slightly before drinking.
Fireweed was traditionally used as a drink in northern regions, where people valued its pleasant taste and the chance to add variety to the table without caffeinated leaves. Today, fireweed herbal tea is chosen for its mild taste, deep aroma and lack of caffeine.
