Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble substance, which means a fatty medium is needed for it to be absorbed normally in the body. That is why manufacturers of vitamin D3 supplements often include an oil base in the formula.
A dose of 2000 IU (IU = international units) is no longer a minimum preventive level but a fairly noticeable one, which adults often choose for regular use, especially in autumn and winter or when they rarely spend time in the sun.
There are no strict rules about the time of day for vitamin D3 — studies do not show a fundamental difference between morning and evening intake in terms of absorption.
