Both vitamins are fat-soluble and linked to calcium metabolism, but at different stages. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) contributes to the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food and helps maintain normal blood calcium levels. Without enough D3, calcium from food is simply absorbed less well — no matter how much of it there is in your diet.
Because D3 and K2 are fat-soluble vitamins, how well they are absorbed depends directly on the presence of fat in your food. Taking the tablets on an empty stomach or with just water is not the best option: without fat, the vitamins are absorbed less well. Ideally, take them with a meal or straight after one, as long as the meal contains at least a little fat: eggs, nuts, avocado, vegetable oil or butter, oily fish, dairy products.
Vitamin D3 is synthesised in the skin under the influence of ultraviolet light, while K2 comes mainly from fermented and fatty foods. In practice, many people get less of both than they would like.
