Why is safflower oil used in the capsules and what is it for?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble substance, which means a fatty medium is needed for it to be absorbed normally in the body. That is why manufacturers of vitamin D3 supplements often include an oil base in the formula.

ALG Pharma D3-vitamiin 2000 IU uses safflower oil for this purpose. It helps distribute the active ingredient evenly inside the capsule — this is standard practice for fat-soluble vitamins.

In practice this means the capsule is best taken with food, especially if the meal contains fats — for example breakfast or lunch with oil, nuts, eggs or dairy products. This is a general recommendation for all fat-soluble vitamins and does not depend on the particular brand.

If you take the supplement on an empty stomach or on a very low-fat diet, absorption may be less effective — this is worth bearing in mind when choosing when to take it.
