The figure of 40,000 IU in the product name is neither a single dose nor the total per pack: according to the label, the 90 capsules contain a total of 360,000 IU. Each capsule contains 4000 IU (100 µg) of cholecalciferol — a high but common dose for adults who are deliberately making up for a deficiency or maintaining their vitamin D levels in autumn and winter.
Vitamin D3 is one of the fat-soluble vitamins: fats are needed for it to be absorbed in the intestine. When the cholecalciferol is already dissolved in oil inside the capsule, this step is partly “done in advance” — the substance is in a form that is ready to be absorbed.
Vitamin D3 is better absorbed together with food that contains fat, so the best time is breakfast or lunch rather than in the evening on an empty stomach. Taking it in the first half of the day also fits the natural rhythm: vitamin D is involved in processes that are more active during the day.
