Lekraset Caraway (Carum carvi L.) 50g is a dried herbal supplement of 100% caraway fruit (seeds) from Carum carvi L. (family Apiaceae). Caraway is a biennial plant native to Western Asia, Europe and North Africa, and one of the most ancient and widely used culinary spices and traditional medicinal herbs in European herbal tradition. Caraway seeds have a characteristic warm, slightly anise-like, earthy and distinctively pleasant aroma and flavour, attributed to the principal aromatic compounds in the essential oil: carvone (42–65%) and limonene (20–40%), along with dihydrocarvone and other minor volatile compounds. Caraway is commonly used in Central European, Baltic and Nordic cuisine — in rye bread, sauerkraut, cheeses, soups and stews. As a food supplement herbal preparation, caraway seeds are used to make an herbal infusion (tea). Not a medicinal product.

Customer Questions
How do I prepare caraway tea from these whole fruits, and how strong should I make it?
To make an infusion, measure roughly 1–2 teaspoons of the whole dried fruits per 200–250 ml of water. Lightly crush them in a mortar or between two spoons first — this breaks the fruit walls and lets the essential oil (mainly carvone and limonene) escape into the water, giving a noticeably warmer, more aromatic cup.Pour water that has just come off a full boil (about 95–98 °C) over the crushed fruits, cover the cup or pot, and steep for 10–15 minutes. Covering prevents the volatile aromatics from escaping with the steam. Strain before drinking. The resulting tea has a golden hue and a distinct anise-like warmth.Strength is personal: start with 1 teaspoon and a 10-minute steep, then adjust. The fruits can be re-steeped once; the second infusion will be milder but still aromatic. Because this is a single-ingredient product with no added flavourings, the taste reflects the batch’s natural oil content — some harvests are more pungent than others.Store the prepared tea in the fridge for up to 24 hours if you prefer it cold, but the aroma is strongest fresh. Do not boil the fruits directly; prolonged heat degrades the delicate essential oil.
Can I use these whole caraway fruits in baking and cooking the same way as ground caraway?
Whole fruits behave differently from pre-ground powder. Their intact structure protects the essential oil, so flavour releases gradually during cooking or baking. For rye bread dough, many bakers lightly crush or coarsely grind the fruits just before mixing — this gives bursts of aroma in the crumb while keeping some texture. If you prefer even distribution, grind only what you need; pre-ground caraway loses its volatile oils within weeks. In long-simmered dishes (cabbage stews, soups, braised meats), you can add the fruits whole at the start; they soften and mellow over 60–90 minutes. For quicker dishes or pickling brines, crush them first or tie them in a muslin bag for easy removal. Toasting the fruits in a dry pan for 30–60 seconds before use deepens the flavour toward nutty, caramel notes — useful for cheese spreads or roasted root vegetables.A 50 g pack yields roughly 30–35 teaspoons. In a typical rye loaf (1 kg flour), 1–2 teaspoons of lightly crushed fruits is a common starting point. Adjust to taste; the anise-like character intensifies with heat and time. Because the product is dried fruit only, with no anti-caking agents, it stores well in a sealed jar away from light and heat — the whole form naturally preserves aroma longer than powder.
Are there any allergies or situations where I should be cautious with caraway?
Caraway (Carum carvi) is a member of the Apiaceae (umbellifer) family. People who react to celery, fennel, anise, coriander, dill, parsley, or carrot may also react to caraway because of shared allergenic proteins. If you have known sensitivities to any of these, start with a very small amount — a pinch in food or a weak infusion — and observe for any itching, swelling, or digestive discomfort.During pregnancy and breastfeeding, traditional culinary amounts are generally considered normal dietary intake, but concentrated herbal infusions or supplement-level use warrant a conversation with a midwife, doctor, or pharmacist. The essential oil components (carvone, limonene) are present in the whole fruit at natural levels, but their concentration in a strong daily tea is higher than in occasional seasoning. If you are on regular medication — especially drugs metabolised by CYP450 enzymes, since limonene can interact with some pathways — mention caraway use to your prescriber. This is a precaution, not a known contraindication for culinary quantities.Stop use if any unwanted reaction appears (skin rash, breathing difficulty, digestive upset). The product is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease. It is a food-grade dried fruit suitable for culinary and infusion use as part of a varied, balanced diet.

Product Overview

LEKRASET Köömen viljad 50 g is dried caraway fruit from Carum carvi, a classic herbal supplement and aromatic spice long used across Europe. People usually choose caraway when they want a warm, pleasantly spiced herbal infusion that also fits naturally into meals. This product is a simple single-ingredient option for those who appreciate traditional plant-based products, classic Baltic and Nordic flavours, or herbal teas with a warming taste profile.

Key Components and Uses

The best-known active substances in caraway are volatile compounds found in its essential oil, especially:

  • Carvone
  • Limonene

These aromatic components give the seeds their slightly anise-like scent. Because this product contains the whole dried fruit, it can be used in various ways:

  • As an infusion: For a warming herbal tea.
  • As a culinary ingredient: To add flavour to rye bread, soups, cabbage dishes, or cheeses.

Usage and Considerations

This product may suit adults who enjoy herbal infusions, want to diversify their menu with traditional spices, or look for a gentle plant-based addition after substantial dishes. It offers a practical crossover as both a food supplement and a familiar kitchen spice.

Important Notes:

  • As with other herbs from the Apiaceae family, use caution if you are sensitive to related plants.
  • During pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is sensible to speak with a healthcare professional before use.
  • Stop use if any unwanted reaction appears.
