In most supplements zinc is present as a mineral salt, such as sulfate, oxide, citrate or gluconate. In zinc L-carnosine the mineral is chemically bound to carnosine, a dipeptide that occurs naturally in body tissues.
Zinc supplements are generally included in the diet when food does not fully cover the body's need for this mineral. Zinc is contained in sufficient amounts in meat, seafood (especially oysters), legumes, nuts and seeds. If these foods rarely appear on the menu, for example with a vegetarian or monotonous diet, an additional source of zinc may be justified.
