Sage leaves (Salvia officinalis) from the Estonian herbal brand Horst are loose dried leaves of common garden sage, packed in a simple 50 g pack. Sage has been used in European herbal tradition for centuries — from monastery gardens of the Middle Ages to modern kitchens and tea cupboards. The Latin name comes from salvare, "to save", which already tells you how highly the plant was valued.
The activity of sage leaves comes from their essential oil (with thujone, cineole and camphor), rosmarinic acid, flavonoids and tannins. The tannins give the leaf its characteristic slightly bitter, astringent taste — that "tightening" sensation in the mouth when you sip a warm infusion. This astringency is the reason sage tea and gargles have traditionally been used for an irritated throat, hoarse voice or inflamed gums. The aromatic oils add a warming, slightly resinous note and contribute to the herb's reputation as a classic cold-season plant.
Typical ways people use Horst sage leaves:
A standard infusion is made by pouring about 200 ml of hot (not boiling) water over 1 teaspoon of dried leaves, covering the cup and letting it steep for 8–10 minutes before straining. Loose-leaf form lets you adjust the strength yourself, which is harder to do with tea bags. Stored in a tightly closed container away from light and moisture, the leaves keep their aroma well until the end of the shelf life printed on the pack.
A few honest notes before you start. Sage contains thujone, so it is not recommended in large amounts or for long uninterrupted periods. It is best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding (it can reduce milk supply), and people with epilepsy or those taking sedative, antidiabetic or anticoagulant medication should consult a doctor or pharmacist first. Sage leaves are a food and herbal product, not a medicine, and do not replace treatment prescribed by a healthcare professional.
