Rubella Fashion Color Permanent Cream Hair Dye in shade 4.0 Dark Brown (Dark Chestnut) is a permanent oxidative cream hair colouring product from the Rubella (Fara) range, providing a rich, deep dark brown colour with a warm chestnut undertone. The permanent hair colouring process works through an oxidative chemistry mechanism: the alkaline dye cream is mixed with a hydrogen peroxide developer immediately before application; in the alkaline pH environment, dye precursor molecules penetrate the hair cortex and are oxidatively coupled to form stable, large chromophore molecules that are permanently fixed within the cortex. The formula contains rice protein, which has a film-forming and conditioning effect on the hair cuticle, sealing the cortex, increasing colour retention and providing shine. The included post-colour fixing balm is enriched with vitamins and keratin to provide conditioning, smoothing and strengthening of the hair shaft after the colouring process, countering the structural protein changes induced by the alkaline and oxidative chemistry of the dyeing process. Shade 4.0 is a dark brown with a warm chestnut undertone. On natural hair that is already dark brown to black, the change will be subtle — mainly a refresh with added warmth and shine. On medium to light brown hair, expect a noticeable deepening and a richer, more even tone. If you have a significant amount of grey (over 30–40%), the chestnut nuance will appear brighter on those strands, creating a natural-looking highlight effect rather than a flat, uniform block of colour. Previously coloured hair, especially if it has been lightened or toned, may absorb the pigment more intensely, so the result can come out slightly darker than on virgin roots. Because this is an oxidative permanent dye, the colour develops inside the hair shaft and will not wash out; regrowth will be visible after 4–6 weeks. For the most predictable outcome, do a strand test on a hidden section using the exact mixing ratio and development time you plan to follow.
As an oxidative cream colour, this product must be mixed with a hydrogen peroxide developer (usually 6% / 20 vol for standard coverage, 9% / 30 vol for resistant grey or a lift of up to one level). The standard mixing ratio is 1 part colour cream to 1 part developer by volume — for the 115 ml tube, that means 115 ml of developer. Mix in a non-metallic bowl until smooth. Apply immediately to dry, unwashed hair, starting at the roots if you have regrowth, then pulling through the lengths for the last 10 minutes. Maximum development time is 40 minutes; do not exceed it. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water until the water runs clear, then shampoo gently. The included fixing balm with keratin and vitamins is designed for the post-colour step: apply it to towel-dried hair, leave for 3–5 minutes, then rinse. The rice protein in the colour cream helps smooth the cuticle during the process, while the balm reinforces that effect, reducing roughness and improving shine. Avoid heat styling for 24 hours after colouring to let the cuticle fully close.
Oxidative hair dyes contain precursors (such as paraphenylenediamine) that can sensitise the immune system over time. A reaction may not appear on the first, second, or tenth use, but can suddenly occur as a severe contact dermatitis — redness, swelling, itching, blistering — not only on the scalp but also on the face, neck, and eyelids. To test, mix a tiny amount of colour cream and developer in the same 1:1 ratio. Using a cotton bud, apply a 1 cm spot behind the ear or on the inner forearm. Leave uncovered for 48 hours; do not wash, cover, or apply other products on that spot. If any redness, burning, itching, swelling, or blistering appears — even mildly — do not use the product on your head. Wash the test area immediately and consult a pharmacist or doctor. Repeat this test before every single colouring session, even if you have used this exact shade before, because sensitivity can develop at any time. Also skip the test if the scalp is already irritated, sunburned, or has open cuts.
During the oxidative process, the alkaline environment opens the hair cuticle so colour precursors can enter the cortex. This temporary swelling can leave the cuticle edges raised, making hair feel rough or porous after rinsing. The rice protein in the colour cream forms a light, breathable film on the hair surface while the dye develops. This film helps keep the cuticle scales lying flatter during processing, which reduces mechanical friction and improves light reflection — so the hair feels sleeker immediately after the first rinse. After shampooing, the fixing balm delivers hydrolysed keratin, a protein with a similar amino-acid profile to natural hair keratin. It temporarily fills microscopic gaps in the cuticle layer, restoring elasticity and reducing flyaway strands. The added vitamins (typically panthenol and vitamin E derivatives in such balms) support moisture retention and antioxidant protection. For best results, leave the balm on for the full 3–5 minutes before rinsing with cool water; this helps seal the cuticle and lock in the new pigment, extending colour vibrancy between washes.
