ORGANIC ALTAY Pumpkin Seed Oil 100 ml is an unrefined plant oil cold-pressed from the seeds of Cucurbita pepo. It has a deep amber-green colour, a thick texture and a distinctive nutty, slightly toasted aroma — typical signs that the oil has been pressed gently and bottled without heat treatment or chemical solvents. In the Vitateka.ee healthy food selection it belongs to the category of culinary seed oils valued both for flavour and for their fatty acid profile.
Pumpkin seed oil is naturally rich in unsaturated fatty acids, mainly linoleic acid (omega-6) and oleic acid (omega-9), accompanied by smaller amounts of palmitic and stearic acids. These lipids are building blocks of cell membranes and a source of energy that the body uses more efficiently than refined fats. The oil also contains naturally occurring vitamin E (tocopherols), carotenoids and phytosterols — plant compounds that contribute to the oil's stability and to its characteristic colour.
A particularly interesting feature of pumpkin seeds is their content of zinc and magnesium, part of which passes into the oil together with fat-soluble micronutrients. Tocopherols act as antioxidants inside the oil itself, protecting the polyunsaturated fatty acids from oxidation, and they continue to play an antioxidant role once consumed. Phytosterols are structurally similar to cholesterol and are studied in nutrition science for their place in a balanced diet.
In Eastern European and Austrian culinary tradition, pumpkin seed oil has been used for centuries as a finishing oil. The simplest way to enjoy it is cold: a teaspoon drizzled over salads, baked vegetables, pumpkin or lentil soup, cottage cheese, boiled potatoes or porridge. It pairs well with apple cider vinegar, honey and lemon juice in dressings. Because the oil is unrefined, it should not be used for frying — high temperatures destroy its aroma and active components. Store the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place and ideally refrigerate after opening.
The product suits people who want to diversify the fats in their menu, fans of plant-based cuisine, and anyone looking for a flavourful alternative to the usual sunflower or olive oil. As with any oil, moderation matters — one to two teaspoons a day is usually enough. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or following a specific therapeutic diet, it is wise to consult your doctor or nutritionist before adding new oils in larger amounts.
