How does this differ from a regular body lotion, and when would I choose one over the other?

Body lotions are typically oil-in-water emulsions with a high water content — they spread easily, absorb quickly, and feel light, making them suitable for normal to mildly dry skin or warm weather. This cream, by contrast, uses petrolatum as a primary base, creating a semi-occlusive film that physically slows transepidermal water loss. That makes it better suited for situations where the skin barrier is already compromised: after frequent hand-washing, during the heating season, on chronically rough patches (elbows, knees, heels), or in cold, windy conditions. The trade-off is a richer, slower-absorbing texture and a slight tackiness while the film sets. If your skin feels tight, rough, or "sandpaper-like" despite using lotion, switching to an occlusive cream like this for a week or two often restores comfort. You can also layer: lotion first for hydration, then a thin layer of this cream on problem spots to lock it in.
