In most mineral supplements, calcium comes in the form of salts: carbonate, citrate, gluconate and other chemically produced compounds. Calcium from eggshell is also mainly calcium carbonate, but of natural origin: the shell is ground and cleaned and then used as a source of the mineral.
Calcium and magnesium are involved in opposite phases of the same process: calcium triggers the contraction of muscle fibres, while magnesium ensures their subsequent relaxation. If there is not enough magnesium, muscles may recover less well after exertion — one of the reasons why these two minerals are often combined in one formula.
For most healthy adults, a calcium and magnesium complex is a familiar addition to the diet. The label advises consulting a doctor before use, and in a number of situations this is particularly important.
