In most mineral supplements, calcium comes in the form of salts: carbonate, citrate, gluconate and other chemically produced compounds. Calcium from eggshell is also mainly calcium carbonate, but of natural origin: the shell is ground and cleaned and then used as a source of the mineral.
In practice, this means that the form of calcium in this product is close to carbonate, which is well studied and widely used in supplements. Calcium carbonate is better absorbed when taken with food, when acid is present in the stomach — this is worth bearing in mind when choosing when to take it.
Vitamin D3, which is included in this complex, plays an important role in calcium absorption. Without enough vitamin D, the body absorbs calcium much less well, whatever its source — so the presence of D3 in the formula makes the supplement more balanced than calcium-only products.
If you have a sensitive stomach or a chronic gastrointestinal condition, it is worth discussing the choice of calcium form with a specialist.
