The direct pigments sit on the hair’s outer layer and wash out gradually, so you can expect the medium brown tone to stay visible for about 4 to 8 shampoos. Processing time matters: leaving the shampoo on longer during application deposits more pigment, which extends the wear. Hair porosity is the other big factor — porous or damaged strands grab and hold colour more tightly, so the shade may last beyond 8 washes, while low-porosity hair may shed it sooner. The built-in UV filter helps slow fading from sunlight, but frequent washing, hot water, and clarifying shampoos will accelerate the fade. If you want the colour to linger, wash less often, use lukewarm water, and choose a gentle, colour-safe shampoo between tint refreshes.
The formula uses direct dyes that don’t need peroxide, so it won’t further damage already-lightened hair. However, bleached or highly porous strands absorb pigment much more aggressively. In practice, the V21 medium brown can read significantly darker, almost dark brown, on bleached sections, and it may cling for well over 8 washes because the open cuticle traps the colour. Before committing to a full head, apply a small amount to a hidden strand, follow the recommended processing time, rinse, and evaluate. If the result is too intense, you can shorten the processing time on the next application or dilute the shampoo with a regular conditioner to soften the deposit. Also note that very porous hair may show uneven uptake if some areas are more damaged than others.
Even though this is a non-oxidative, semi-permanent shampoo, the direct dyes and other ingredients can still trigger contact allergy in sensitive people. To test, mix a tiny amount of the product as you would for use, apply a pea-sized dab behind the ear or on the inner forearm, and leave it uncovered for 48 hours. The direct pigments in this shampoo are designed to cling to hair, but they will also bind to skin, fabric, grout, and porous countertops if given the chance. Before starting, put on the gloves provided (or nitrile gloves) and smear a thin layer of petroleum jelly or a rich barrier cream along the hairline, ears, and nape — this creates a shield that wipes away cleanly. Keep a damp cloth handy to wipe any drips on the sink, tiles, or floor immediately; once the pigment dries it becomes much harder to remove. Use an old dark towel or a dedicated colour cape to protect clothing and shoulders. After rinsing the shampoo out, give the shower or tub a quick rinse with warm water and a mild cleaner before the residue sets. If staining does occur on skin, a gentle oil-based cleanser or micellar water usually lifts it within a day or two.
