Caffeine is a methylxanthine alkaloid with a vasoactive effect on the scalp microcirculation when applied topically; in hair care cosmetics, caffeine is used for its stimulating effect on the scalp blood circulation and its well-studied ability to penetrate the hair follicle when applied in rinse-off shampoo format. Ginger root essential oil (Zingiber officinale) provides a characteristic warm, spicy, invigorating aroma and contains the active terpene compounds zingiberene, beta-sesquiphellandrene and bisabolene, which contribute to the stimulating sensory experience on the scalp. Together, the caffeine + ginger combination provides an invigorating, energising scalp cleansing experience that is commonly used in cosmetic hair care for scalp stimulation and volumising.
