The main difference is where the sweetness comes from. Ordinary jelly sweets are based on sugar or glucose-fructose syrup. Here two sweeteners are used instead: maltitol, a sugar alcohol that gives a familiar confectionery sweetness and an elastic texture, and stevia, a plant-based sweetener that enhances the flavour without the calories of sugar.
The sweets contain no added sugar or fructose, which makes them an interesting option for people who limit their sugar intake. However, this does not automatically make them safe for people with diabetes or insulin resistance.
The sweets contain no added sugar, which at first glance looks like a plus for a child's diet. However, they do contain maltitol, a sugar alcohol that in children (especially younger ones) can cause bloating or a laxative effect even in small amounts. This is because sugar alcohols are absorbed more slowly and partly ferment in the gut.
