OSTROVIT Lactase is a food supplement with the enzyme β-galactosidase for situations when you enjoy dairy products but do not tolerate lactose very well. Lactose consists of two simpler sugars - glucose and galactose. In order for the intestine to absorb it normally, the body needs the enzyme lactase. In some adults, less lactase is produced than in childhood. In that case, undigested lactose passes further into the intestine, where bacteria begin to ferment it. This is often associated with bloating, gas, rumbling and discomfort after milk, ice cream or creamy dairy products.

Lactase β-galactosidase works in a very straightforward way: it splits the lactose molecule into glucose and galactose, which are much easier to absorb. This mechanism has been well studied, which is why lactase is used both in lactose-free milk and in enzyme supplements. An interesting fact: the same principle is used in the production of lactose-free dairy products - the enzyme breaks down lactose before the product even reaches the table.

One OSTROVIT capsule contains 5000 FCC units of lactase. FCC is an international system for measuring the activity of food enzymes. What matters here is not simply the amount of the substance in milligrams, but how actively the enzyme can break down lactose.

The formula also contains inulin - a soluble dietary fibre that serves as a nutrient source for certain beneficial intestinal bacteria. This means the formula combines an enzyme that works with lactose and fibre associated with supporting the intestinal microbiota.
