Astaxanthin exists in several forms that differ in origin and chemical structure. Synthetic astaxanthin is made by chemical means and is used mainly in aquaculture. Natural astaxanthin from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis is the form used in food supplements for people, and this is the extract included in OstroVit Astaxanthin Forte.
Because astaxanthin is fat-soluble, it should be taken with a meal that contains fats, for example with the main meal that includes oil, fish, nuts or avocado. Taking it on an empty stomach or with a completely fat-free meal reduces the absorption of the carotenoid. This is a general rule for the whole group of fat-soluble nutrients (vitamins A, D, E, K, carotenoids).
As a carotenoid, astaxanthin fits well into antioxidant regimens. In practice it is often combined with omega-3 fatty acids. Both nutrients are fat-soluble, and they are convenient to take together with a meal containing fat. Omega-3s perform their own role and do not compete with astaxanthin for absorption.
