Because astaxanthin is fat-soluble, it should be taken with a meal that contains fats, for example with the main meal that includes oil, fish, nuts or avocado. Taking it on an empty stomach or with a completely fat-free meal reduces the absorption of the carotenoid. This is a general rule for the whole group of fat-soluble nutrients (vitamins A, D, E, K, carotenoids).
The manufacturer states the specific dosage and schedule on the packaging, and that is what should be followed. It is not recommended for children, pregnant women or breastfeeding women. It is not advisable to increase the dose on your own: antioxidants in excessive amounts can have a pro-oxidant effect, the opposite of the expected result.
Antioxidants in general, and astaxanthin in particular, do not work as fast-acting agents. Their effect builds up with regular, course-based intake alongside a balanced diet. It is not advisable to expect noticeable changes in the first few days; this is normal for this class of substances.
The supplement is often included in the routine during periods of increased strain: an active sunny season, intensive training, frequent flights, long hours working in front of a screen. These are logical contexts, since the oxidative load on the body increases precisely under such conditions.
If you take other fat-soluble supplements or several antioxidants at the same time, it makes sense to consult a specialist. Not because astaxanthin itself is dangerous, but so that the combination is balanced and does not duplicate the same mechanisms at excessive doses.
