Domashny Doktor (Home Doctor) Cream-Balsam with Birch Tar is a cosmetic topical cream-balsam from the Domashny Doktor range, formulated with birch tar (Betula pendula tar) and sophora extract (Styphnolobium japonicum) for the cosmetic care of problematic, oily and irritated skin. Birch tar is produced by the dry distillation of birch bark and wood, yielding a dark, aromatic tar rich in phenolic compounds including guaiacol, cresol, dimethyl phenols and creosol, as well as hydrocarbon fractions. In traditional cosmetic use across Russia and Eastern Europe, birch tar has been used for centuries in skin care formulations due to its distinctive astringent, soothing and skin-conditioning properties when applied topically in diluted cosmetic preparations. The cream-balsam formula provides a soothing cosmetic effect on the skin surface, contributes to reducing the appearance of redness and irritation, and helps restore a healthy-looking appearance to the skin. Sophora extract (Styphnolobium japonicum, Japanese pagoda tree) provides rutin (quercetin-3-O-rutinoside) and other flavonoids, contributing antioxidant and soothing properties to the formula. The cream-balsam is also suitable for scalp application as part of cosmetic scalp and hair care routines. 42 ml.

Customer Questions
How do I apply this cream-balsam, and can I use it on my face, body, and scalp?
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin on the areas that need attention — this can be the face, body, or along the scalp line. The balsam-cream texture is richer than a lotion and stays on the surface longer, which makes it practical for small target zones, flaky patches, or scalp areas where a lighter product would absorb too quickly.Use a small amount first; you can always add more if the area feels like it needs it. On the scalp, part the hair and dab the product onto the skin rather than the hair shafts. On the face, avoid the eye area and the corners of the mouth. On the body, it works well on elbows, knees, or other spots that tend to look rough or shiny.Because the formula contains birch tar, it leaves a characteristic resinous scent and a slightly occlusive feel. If you apply it in the morning, give it a few minutes to settle before putting on clothing or applying sunscreen or makeup over it. In the evening, it can be the last step after cleansing. Wash your hands after each application.Frequency depends on how your skin responds. Many people start with once daily or every other day on the affected areas and adjust from there. If the skin feels comfortable and the appearance improves, you can maintain that rhythm. If it feels too heavy, reduce the amount or frequency.
The product has a strong tar smell — is that normal, and does it linger?
Yes, the strong, smoky, resinous smell is completely normal — it comes directly from the birch tar, which is the main active ingredient. No perfume or fragrance is added to mask it. Birch tar is produced by dry distillation of birch bark, and its distinctive odor is part of what makes it recognizable in traditional Eastern European skin preparations. The scent is most noticeable right after application and while the product sits on the skin surface. Because the balsam-cream texture is somewhat occlusive, the smell can linger for a few hours, especially in warm conditions or on areas with less airflow (like the scalp under hair). On the face or body, it usually fades as the product absorbs and as you move through the day.If the smell bothers you, try applying it in the evening so it has overnight to settle. On the scalp, applying it 30–60 minutes before washing your hair can give the active time to work while limiting how long you notice the scent. On the body, wearing loose, breathable clothing over the area helps. Avoid layering heavily scented products on top, as the combination can be more noticeable than the tar alone. The odor does not indicate spoilage. Store the tube tightly closed at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. If the smell changes to something rancid or sour, or if the texture separates, discard the product.
My skin is sensitive and reactive. Is this suitable, and how should I test it first?
This cream-balsam is formulated for skin that looks oily, uneven, or easily irritated by external factors like weather, friction, or styling products. However, "easily irritated" in a cosmetic sense is not the same as clinically sensitive or barrier-compromised skin. Birch tar is a potent botanical ingredient with an astringent, resinous character; while many people find it calming for surface redness and shine, others — especially those with a history of contact allergy, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, or very thin skin — may react to it.Before using it on larger areas, do a patch test: apply a pea-sized amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear, leave it on for 24 hours (or at least overnight), and watch for redness, itching, burning, or swelling. If any of those appear, wash the area with mild soap and water and do not use the product. If the patch test is fine, start with a very small amount on the target area once every other day. Increase frequency only if the skin feels comfortable after a week. Avoid the eye area, mucous membranes, and any broken or open skin. Stop immediately if irritation or an allergic reaction develops. If you are under dermatological care, using prescription topicals (retinoids, steroids, calcineurin inhibitors), or have a diagnosed skin condition, ask your specialist before adding a tar-based cosmetic to your routine. The same applies if you are pregnant or breastfeeding — while cosmetic use on small areas is generally low-risk, a pharmacist or doctor can confirm it fits your personal situation.

What it is

Home Doctor "DOMAŠNIJ DOKTOR" Kehakreem-palsam kasetõrv 42 ml is a cosmetic cream-balsam with birch tar and sophora extract, created for oily, easily irritated and visibly unbalanced skin. People usually choose this type of product when they want a richer topical formula for areas that look red, rough or prone to excess shine. It can be used on the face, body or scalp, depending on where the skin needs extra attention.

Key components

  • Birch tar — the main active, with a long history in Eastern European skin applications. Obtained from birch bark through dry distillation, it is valued in cosmetics for its strong-smelling, resin-like character and its effect on the skin surface. It has an astringent feel, may make oily areas seem less heavy, and can calm skin that reacts to external factors, helping create a more balanced-looking appearance. This is why tar-based creams are often chosen for skin that does not feel settled.
  • Sophora extract — adds flavonoids, including rutin, known for antioxidant and soothing properties. In this combination, birch tar brings the traditional skin-conditioning element, while sophora helps soften the formula’s overall effect on stressed-looking skin.

The texture also matters: a balsam-cream tends to stay on the surface a little longer than a light lotion, which makes it practical for small target areas, flaky patches or scalp zones.

When people choose it

This product may suit adults who want occasional topical help for skin that looks oily, uneven or easily irritated by weather, friction or styling products. Some use it on small areas of the face, others on the body or along the scalp line when the skin there feels unsettled. The characteristic tar smell is normal and comes from the active itself, not from added perfume.

Important notes

  • Start with a small amount and see how your skin responds.
  • Avoid the eye area, mucous membranes and open skin.
  • Stop use if irritation or allergy appears.
  • If your skin is very reactive, or if you are unsure whether a tar cosmetic fits your regimen, ask a pharmacist or skin specialist before use.
