Alteja Black Tea with Bergenia and Birch Buds is a flavoured black tea blend from the Alteja range, combining a smooth black tea base with two traditional Siberian herbal additives — Bergenia (Bergenia crassifolia, "badan") leaf and birch (Betula pendula) buds — to create a blend with a deep, rich, slightly astringent taste and a distinctive Siberian forest aroma. Bergenia (Bergenia crassifolia), also known as elephant-eared saxifrage or Mongolian tea (the dried, dark fermented leaves are used in Mongolia and the Altai as "Mongolian black tea"), is a succulent perennial of the Saxifragaceae family native to rocky areas of Central Asia and Siberia; its leaves are rich in tannins, arbutin, hydroquinone glucoside, flavonoids and gallic acid, providing a deep astringent note that complements black tea's tannin profile. Birch buds (Betula pendula) contain essential oils (betulenol), flavonoids, resinous acids and vitamin C, and add a fresh, resinous, slightly balsamic note to the blend. The combination produces a bold, dark blend that warms from the inside. 80 g per pack. Contains caffeine.

Alteja Black Tea with Bergenia and Birch Buds is a black tea blend for people who enjoy a fuller, more characterful cup than plain black tea alone. The tea base gives familiar depth and gentle stimulation from caffeine, while bergenia leaf and birch buds add a distinctly northern, forest-like profile: slightly astringent, resinous and softly balsamic. It suits slow morning tea time, a warming break on a cold day, or any moment when you want a stronger herbal-tea character without giving up the body of black tea.
What makes this blend interesting is the pairing of classic black tea with two plants long associated with Siberian and Altai tea traditions. Bergenia, also called badan or Mongolian tea, is valued for its naturally high tannin content. In the cup, tannins create that dry, pleasantly puckering sensation on the tongue and give the infusion a darker, more robust feel. Birch buds contribute aromatic compounds and plant flavonoids that shape the scent rather than making the tea taste “green” or grassy. The result is not sweet or light, but deep and brisk, with a woody freshness that lingers after sipping.
This kind of composition is often chosen by tea drinkers who want more complexity than a standard breakfast blend, or by those who enjoy traditional botanical accents in hot drinks. Bergenia has a long history of use in Mongolia and Siberia, where fermented leaves were brewed as a local tea. Here, it works not as a separate herbal infusion, but as part of the overall flavour structure, adding body and a wild, earthy nuance that matches well with birch.
Because this is still a caffeinated black tea, it can fit well earlier in the day or in the afternoon when you want a more invigorating cup. If you are sensitive to caffeine, prefer lighter infusions or avoid strong tannic drinks on an empty stomach, start with a shorter brew and see how the taste suits you.
