Turpentine Ointment 25 g from Yaroslavl Pharmaceutical Factory (Russia) is a cosmetic topical ointment prepared with turpentine (spirit of turpentine / oil of turpentine) as the principal active, in a white petroleum jelly (petrolatum) and water base with polyglyceryl fatty acid esters. Turpentine is an essential oil mixture (primarily α-pinene and β-pinene monoterpenes) obtained by steam distillation of the resin of pine trees (Pinus spp.), and has a characteristic strong, fresh pine/resinous aroma. In cosmetics and topical preparations, turpentine acts as a rubefacient — producing a characteristic warming and stimulating sensation on the skin surface as it penetrates the stratum corneum and mildly stimulates superficial skin circulation, generating local skin redness (erythema) and warmth at the application site. The ointment format in petrolatum base provides prolonged contact of the turpentine with the skin surface. 25 g in a glass jar. For external use only.

It belongs to the classic rubefacient type: after application, the skin may become warm, pink and more reactive for a while. Many people use this kind of ointment for massage of overworked muscles, stiff areas after physical effort, or as a warming skin product in colder weather.
The key active is turpentine, a pine resin distillate rich in aromatic compounds called monoterpenes, mainly alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. In plain language, these substances mildly irritate the upper layers of the skin. This triggers a feeling of heat and increases superficial microcirculation in the applied area, which is why rubefacient products are associated with a “warming-up” effect. The petrolatum base is important here: it forms an occlusive layer, slows evaporation and keeps the active in contact with the skin longer, so the sensation develops gradually and can feel more persistent than with a light gel or lotion.
Turpentine preparations have a long history in traditional topical use, especially in warming rubs and massage products with a strong pine aroma. This does not make them gentle, however. The character of this ointment is quite intense: it is more suitable for those who already understand how their skin reacts to heating balms than for someone looking for a mild soothing cream. The jar format also makes it practical when only a small amount is needed on targeted zones such as calves, shoulders, lower back or around joints after strain.
Because this is a potent irritant, start with a very small amount and use only on intact skin. Avoid eyes, mucous membranes, freshly shaved areas and large body surfaces. The pine smell can be strong, so good ventilation is sensible. It is not a good fit for sensitive skin, for children without professional advice, or for anyone prone to strong skin reactions. If burning becomes intense or the skin reacts badly, remove the ointment and stop use.
