Brilliant Green Antiseptic Solution 1% is a topical antiseptic solution in pencil applicator format (5 ml), containing 1% brilliant green (viridis nitens, also known as malachite green derivative) in an aqueous-alcohol base. Brilliant green is a triarylmethane dye with antiseptic properties that has been widely used in Eastern European and Russian first-aid practice for topical application to minor skin wounds, cuts and abrasions. The pencil applicator format allows precise, controlled application to the skin. For external use on skin only. Follow all instructions on the product label carefully.

How do I apply the brilliant green pencil correctly for a small cut or scratch?

Before use, clean the affected skin with water and pat it dry. Twist the bottom of the pencil clockwise until the saturated tip is exposed — do not extend it too far, as the applicator is designed to hold just enough solution for a small spot. Dab the tip directly onto the cut, scratch, or abrasion; a light touch transfers the 1% brilliant green solution in a thin layer. Because the base contains alcohol, the liquid spreads quickly and evaporates within seconds, leaving the characteristic green dye on the skin surface. Allow it to dry completely before covering with clothing or a plaster. After application, twist the base counter-clockwise to retract the tip and replace the cap firmly; this prevents the alcohol from drying out and keeps the pencil ready for the next use. The pencil format is intended for spots no larger than a few centimetres — for anything bigger, a liquid bottle or spray is more practical.

What skin areas should I avoid treating with this pencil, and when should I seek professional advice instead?

The pencil is formulated for intact or superficially broken skin on small surface areas only. Avoid contact with the eyes, eyelids, lips, nasal passages, genital mucosa, and any other delicate tissue — the alcohol and dye can cause significant irritation there. Do not apply over large zones (for example, extensive grazes or burns), on deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or wounds with embedded debris; these require proper irrigation and clinical assessment. If the skin around the injury is already highly inflamed, weeping, or shows signs of spreading redness, warmth, or increasing pain, stop self-treatment and seek medical advice. People with known sensitivity to triarylmethane dyes or alcohol-based preparations should also consult a pharmacist before use. The product is not a substitute for professional wound care when the injury is beyond a minor scratch or cut.

The solution contains alcohol — does it sting on open skin, and are there any fire safety precautions?

The aqueous-alcohol base serves two purposes: it helps the brilliant green spread in a thin, even film and it evaporates rapidly, which is why the pencil feels dry within seconds. On intact skin the sensation is usually neutral; on a fresh cut or abrasion the alcohol typically causes a short, sharp sting that subsides as the liquid evaporates — this is expected and not a sign of damage. Because the product contains flammable alcohol, do not apply it near open flames, lit cigarettes, gas stoves, candles, or any ignition source. Wait until the treated spot is completely dry (usually under a minute) before approaching heat.
