How long does the green colour stay on the skin, and does it stain clothing permanently?

Brilliant green is a triarylmethane dye designed to remain visible on the skin so you can see exactly where the antiseptic has been applied. On the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer) the colour typically persists for 3–7 days, gradually fading as the skin naturally exfoliates. It does not penetrate into living tissue and is not absorbed systemically in meaningful amounts. On clothing, bedding, or towels the dye can bind to fibres and is notoriously difficult to remove — especially on cotton and synthetics. To minimise transfer, allow the application site to dry completely (about 30–60 seconds) before putting on clothes or a bandage. If staining occurs, prompt soaking in cold water with an enzymatic detergent may reduce it, but complete removal is not guaranteed. For this reason, many users reserve the pencil for areas easily covered by a plaster or for spots where temporary green marking is not a cosmetic concern.
