Sea buckthorn oil "Altaiskoe Diveevo" by Planeta Zdorovia is a culinary and food-grade oil pressed from the bright orange berries of Hippophae rhamnoides growing in the Altai region of Siberia. Sea buckthorn has been valued in Russian, Mongolian and Tibetan traditions for centuries, and today it is appreciated for its rich nutritional profile and distinctive tangy-resinous aroma.
The deep amber-red colour of the oil comes from a high concentration of carotenoids — natural plant pigments that the body can convert into vitamin A. Alongside carotenoids, sea buckthorn berries contain tocopherols (the vitamin E family), vitamin K, phytosterols and a rare combination of fatty acids: omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), omega-9 (oleic acid), as well as omega-3 and omega-6. This blend is what makes sea buckthorn oil stand out among other plant oils — palmitoleic acid is naturally present in human skin and mucous membranes, which is why this oil has long been used both internally and externally.
How does it work in practice? When taken with food, the fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids are absorbed together with the lipids of the meal and become available to the body as building blocks for cell membranes, skin, eyes and the lining of the digestive tract. Applied to the skin, the oil forms a thin nourishing film, softens dry areas and is traditionally used on chapped lips, rough elbows and weather-exposed skin.
