Why is a patch test necessary every time, even if I've used similar creams before?

A patch test is not just a formality — it is the only way to know how your skin will react to this specific formula on this specific day. Calcium thioglycolate concentration, pH, and the balance of soothing ingredients (like the aloe vera extract here) vary between brands and even between batches. Your skin's barrier also changes: stress, hormonal shifts, recent sun exposure, illness, or using exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) or retinoids in the past week can all lower your irritation threshold. To patch test, apply a small amount of cream to a coin-sized area on the inner forearm or behind the knee, leave for the recommended time, rinse, and wait 24 hours. Look for redness, itching, swelling, blistering, or delayed burning. If any appear, do not use the product on a larger area. This step takes minutes but prevents days of uncomfortable dermatitis.
