The ŠUNGIIDIMÜTS is a 400 g bag of crushed shungite stone designed to be placed inside a sauna stove together with the regular sauna stones. Shungite is a rare carbon-rich mineral found mainly in the Karelia region of Russia, and it has been used for centuries by local people both in bathing rituals and in folk traditions linked to clean water and steam.
In a sauna setting, shungite is valued for the way it interacts with heat and water. The stone is dense and heats slowly but holds warmth for a long time, releasing a soft, even steam (löyly) when water is thrown over it. Many sauna enthusiasts in Estonia and Finland appreciate that the steam from shungite feels noticeably milder and rounder compared with steam from granite or olivine alone.
The mineral itself is composed largely of carbon, including a small fraction of fullerenes — spherical carbon molecules that are quite rare in nature. Because of this carbon structure, shungite is traditionally associated in folk practice with cleaner air and a fresher feel in the steam room, although these effects are part of sauna tradition rather than proven medical claims.
How to use it. Rinse the shungite under running water before the first use to remove any stone dust. Place the 400 g portion among the upper sauna stones, where it will be reached by the water you pour. A single bag is enough to enrich a small home sauna stove; for larger stoves you can combine several bags. The stones can stay in the stove permanently and be rinsed occasionally if they become dusty.
Shungite is also used outside the sauna — for example, as decorative mineral pieces in a bowl, or in traditional water preparation, where pieces are placed in a glass jug. The 0.4 kg pack is a convenient starter size for trying out the stone at home.
Please note: shungite is a natural mineral product and not a medical device or remedy. It is not intended to treat or prevent any condition. People with cardiovascular issues, low blood pressure or other health concerns should always consult a doctor before regular sauna sessions, regardless of which stones are used.
