Biotin (vitamin B7) is indeed present in eggs, nuts, liver, avocado and some other foods. However, its content there is relatively small, and it is difficult to get a dose comparable to 5000 µg from an ordinary diet without special meal planning.
Biotin takes part in the formation of the protein structures of hair and nails at the cellular level, but this does not mean an immediate effect. Hair grows about 1–1.5 cm a month, and nails even more slowly. Any changes related to their structure become noticeable only as new tissue grows out.
Biotin is one of the water-soluble B vitamins and is generally considered well tolerated. Nevertheless, a 5000 µg supplement is well above the standard daily intake recommended for adults.
