Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is one of the most ancient aromatic herbs of the Caucasus and Central Asia, prized across culinary and herbal traditions from Southeast Asia to the Mediterranean, and is richest in the essential oil compounds linalool, eugenol, methylchavicol (estragole) and camphor that provide its distinctive warm, spicy-herbaceous flavour. Common goldenrod adds a dry-floral-spicy note; agrimony contributes a mild, astringent herbal note; bupleurum adds earthy depth; Ivan chai provides a malty backbone (fermented); cardamom adds bright spice.
