Zhivica chewing resin with cranberry is a traditional Siberian product based on hardened larch sap, combined with cranberry. It is sold as small 0.8 g pieces — five in a pack — and is meant to be chewed slowly, the way people in northern Russia have done it for centuries. Larch resin, also called "zhivitsa", was once the village alternative to chewing gum: a natural, edible substance with a distinct woody-balsamic taste.
The way it works is mechanical and gustatory rather than pharmacological. When you start chewing, the dense resin softens from the warmth of the mouth and turns into an elastic mass. This stimulates saliva flow, which is the body's own way of rinsing teeth and the tongue, neutralising acids and washing away food particles after meals. Active chewing also gives a gentle workout to the jaw muscles and gums. Unlike industrial gum, the resin contains no sugar, sweeteners, synthetic rubbers or artificial flavourings — only the resin itself and cranberry.
What the cranberry adds. Cranberry brings a fresh sour note that balances the slightly bitter, pine-like flavour of larch. It is a berry traditionally appreciated in the Baltic and Nordic regions for its bright taste and natural content of plant acids and polyphenols. In this product, cranberry mostly shapes the flavour profile and makes the chewing experience more pleasant and less resinous.
How to use it: take one piece, warm it briefly between your fingers if it feels hard, then chew slowly. In the first seconds the resin may crumble — this is normal, it simply needs to soften. After a few minutes it becomes a smooth, elastic lump that can be chewed for 10–20 minutes. Most people find one piece per session is enough.
A few honest notes. This is a natural product, not a medicine, and it does not replace brushing, flossing or visits to the dentist. People with dental crowns, bridges, braces or loose fillings should be cautious, because any chewy substance can stick to dental work. If you have a known allergy to conifer resins or to cranberry, it is better to skip this product. Keep out of reach of small children to avoid choking.
