OstroVit Molybdenum is a supplement with molybdenum, a trace element that is mentioned much less often than magnesium or zinc, although several important enzymes in the body cannot function normally without it. One capsule contains 350 µg of molybdenum in the form of sodium molybdate, which is 700% of the reference daily intake. A pack of 60 capsules lasts for about two months.
The most interesting thing about molybdenum is its role in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. Proteins that we get from meat, eggs, legumes and other foods contain sulfur-containing amino acids such as methionine and cysteine. Molybdenum is part of enzyme systems that help the body process these compounds properly. This is why the officially recognised EU claim for molybdenum states that it contributes to the normal metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids.
There is also an interesting scientific fact: the body does not need molybdenum on its own, but as part of a special cofactor that activates several enzymes. These include sulfite oxidase, which is involved in converting sulfites into sulfates, and xanthine oxidase, which is linked to purine metabolism. In other words, molybdenum is a trace element that works literally "behind the scenes" of metabolism.
In a normal diet, molybdenum is found in legumes, whole grains, nuts and some vegetables. The body only needs a very small amount, so pronounced deficiency is rare. The supplement is convenient because it provides a precisely measured amount of molybdenum in one capsule without a complex mineral formula.
