Unlike oxidative dyes that open the hair cuticle and alter the inner pigment, this henna powder coats the outside of each strand with finely milled herbal particles. The colour sits on the surface, so it cannot lighten your hair — it only adds depth or refreshes your existing tone. On untreated hair close to your natural base, the result tends to look richer and more glossy, and the hair often feels fuller and smoother after rinsing. On grey or bleached sections, the plant pigments behave differently: they may appear brighter, more translucent, or uneven because there is no underlying melanin to anchor the shade. Previous chemical colouring, porosity, and even water hardness can shift the final tone. Because the effect is cumulative, repeated applications deepen the colour gradually rather than delivering a dramatic one-step change. If you are used to permanent dyes that promise exact shade matching, treat this as a tonal enhancer rather than a precise colour match.

Start with a non-metallic bowl and spoon — metal can react with the herbal pigments. Mix one 20 g sachet (or the amount you need) with warm water, roughly 60–70 °C, until you have a smooth, yogurt-thick paste. Let it rest for 10–15 minutes so the plant particles fully hydrate; this improves colour release. Apply to clean, damp hair, section by section, working from roots to ends. Wear gloves and protect clothing and surfaces — henna stains are persistent. Cover with a shower cap or cling film and keep warm (a towel turban helps) for 1–3 hours; longer contact generally yields deeper tone, but do not exceed the time suggested on the pack. Rinse thoroughly with water only — skip shampoo for the first 24–48 hours to let the colour oxidise and settle. For your very first use, always do a strand test on a hidden section, especially if your hair is bleached, heavily processed, or mostly grey. This reveals how the shade develops on your specific hair and whether you like the texture change.

Because this product relies on plant powders rather than synthetic dyes, many people with reactive scalps tolerate it better than oxidative systems. However, natural does not mean risk-free: individual allergies to specific herbs (lawsonia, indigo, cassia, etc.) can occur. If you have a known history of contact dermatitis or a very reactive scalp, do a patch test 48 hours before full application — dab a small amount of prepared paste behind the ear or on the inner forearm and watch for redness, itching, or swelling. If you have recently used permanent colour, bleach, or a chemical perm, wait at least two weeks, preferably three to four, before applying henna. The mineral build-up from oxidative dyes can interact unpredictably with plant pigments, sometimes producing greenish or muddy tones. Conversely, if you plan to return to chemical colour after henna, inform your colourist; the herbal coating can resist or alter the uptake of oxidative dyes, and a clarifying or chelating pre-treatment may be needed. When in doubt, consult a dermatologist or trichologist, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a chronic scalp condition.
