L-lysine is produced in several forms, and the one most commonly found in capsules is L-lysine HCL (hydrochloride). This is a salt form of the amino acid: it's stable in storage, lends itself well to precise dosing, and doesn't need extra carriers or solvents.
Lysine is one of the essential amino acids — meaning the only way to get it is from food or supplements. In an ordinary mixed diet with enough meat, fish, eggs and dairy, a deficiency generally doesn't arise. There are, however, situations where an extra source of lysine may be relevant:
L-lysine is an amino acid, and like all amino acids it's absorbed into the body's overall protein metabolism. This means the supplement works in conjunction with diet, not instead of it: if the diet as a whole is low in protein, a single amino acid won't make up for that gap.
