Lysine is one of the essential amino acids — meaning the only way to get it is from food or supplements. In an ordinary mixed diet with enough meat, fish, eggs and dairy, a deficiency generally doesn't arise. There are, however, situations where an extra source of lysine may be relevant:
A monotonous or restrictive diet. Vegetarian and vegan patterns, low-calorie diets, and diets heavy in grains (which are relatively low in lysine) may not fully cover the need for this amino acid.
Increased physical activity. With regular training, the need for amino acids to repair muscle tissue rises. Lysine takes part in the synthesis of proteins, including collagen — a structural component of connective tissue.
Wanting a more complete diet. Some people choose the supplement not because of a pronounced deficiency, but as a simple way to support protein balance without complicating their menu.
Lysine also takes part in collagen synthesis — a protein that skin, cartilage and other tissues depend on for density and elasticity. That makes it of interest not only to athletes but also to anyone paying attention to the condition of their skin and joints.
The supplement is not intended to treat or prevent any disease. With chronic conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other medication use, it's worth discussing with a doctor before starting.
