Glutathione is a molecule that the body produces itself from three amino acids: glycine, glutamate and cysteine. Cysteine is considered the limiting link, as it is the one most often in short supply for synthesis. NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine) is a stable form of cysteine that is well absorbed and serves as the "building material" for making glutathione inside cells.
The approach to taking NAC depends on why it is added to the diet. Most often it is chosen during periods of intensive work, active training or seasonal busyness, that is, when the body is under increased load and it makes sense to pay closer attention to its resources. During such periods the supplement naturally complements an existing scheme of vitamins and minerals.
NAC, as a precursor of glutathione, and the classic antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E act through different mechanisms. Vitamin C works in the watery environment of the cell, vitamin E in the fatty environment (it protects membranes), and glutathione takes part in intracellular reactions that neutralise oxidative stress. In theory they complement one another without duplicating functions.
