This DNC gel uses a water-based gel texture that spreads thinly and absorbs within seconds, leaving no sticky or occlusive film. A serum typically has a thinner, more fluid consistency and often contains a higher concentration of actives in a smaller molecular size for deeper penetration, while a cream relies on oils and butters to create a barrier that locks moisture in. The gel sits between them: it delivers hyaluronic acid as a humectant to attract water into the upper skin layers, but does not replace the lipid barrier function of a cream.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — it pulls water into the stratum corneum from deeper layers or from the environment. In humid conditions or on oilier skin, the gel alone may provide sufficient comfort because ambient moisture and natural sebum slow evaporation. However, in dry indoor air, air-conditioned offices, heated rooms, or cold weather, the water drawn up by the gel can evaporate quickly, leaving skin tighter than before. The product guidance explicitly notes: if your skin is very dry, follow with a cream on top to help reduce water loss.

The manufacturer’s usage instructions state: avoid the eye area unless the product instructions specifically allow it. The periorbital skin is significantly thinner, has fewer oil glands, and is more prone to irritation and milia from products not formulated for that zone. While hyaluronic acid itself is generally well tolerated, the gel may contain preservatives, pH adjusters, or other excipients that are safe for the face but too stimulating for the eye contour.

Layering order follows texture: thinnest to thickest. After cleansing, apply any low-pH water-based actives (vitamin C serum, AHA/BHA toner, prescription retinoids if directed by a clinician). Wait until they absorb, then apply the hyaluronic acid gel while the skin is still slightly damp — this maximizes its humectant effect. Follow with moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen.
