What Is Corn Silk?

Maisitõlvikud (corn silk) from Horst is a single-ingredient herbal product made from the fine, thread-like fibres that grow under the husk of the maize cob. In traditional European and Baltic herbalism these silky strands have been brewed as a mild infusion for generations, and the 35 g pack from Horst offers them in a clean, loose form ready for home preparation.

Natural Composition

The active part of corn silk (Stigma maydis) contains a natural mix of water-soluble substances that pass into the infusion during brewing and give the tea its characteristic light, slightly sweet, herbaceous taste:

  • Flavonoids — plant compounds naturally present in the silk fibres
  • Potassium salts — naturally occurring mineral compounds
  • Plant sterols — naturally found in many botanical herbs
  • Allantoin — present in small amounts
  • Volatile aromatic compounds — responsible for the tea's mild herbaceous character

In folk practice corn silk tea has traditionally been appreciated by people who want a gentle, plant-based drink with a mild diuretic character — meaning it can softly encourage the body's natural fluid balance during the day.

How to Prepare

The Horst format makes preparation straightforward: dried, cut silk in a resealable pack, with no added flavourings, sugar or fillers.

  1. Measure one teaspoon (about 2 g) of dried corn silk.
  2. Pour 200 ml of boiling water over the fibres.
  3. Cover the cup with a lid and leave to brew for around 15 minutes.
  4. Strain and enjoy the light golden infusion.

Brewing under a lid matters — it keeps the volatile aromatic compounds in the cup instead of letting them escape with the steam.

Who May Enjoy It

This herbal tea may suit adults who enjoy traditional plant infusions and prefer a warm, unsweetened drink with meals instead of coffee or black tea. It fits naturally into a lighter eating pattern and can be a pleasant addition to a kitchen shelf of botanical teas alongside nettle, dandelion or birch leaf.

Important Notes

Corn silk infusion is not a medicine and is not intended to treat any condition. Please be aware of the following before use:

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Not suitable for people with known intolerance to maize.
  • If you take prescription medication — especially diuretics, blood pressure or blood sugar treatments — consult your doctor or pharmacist before adding herbal teas to your menu.
  • If you have a chronic illness, seek professional advice first.
  • Store the pack tightly closed in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
