Maisitõlvikud (corn silk) from Horst is a single-ingredient herbal product made from the fine, thread-like fibres that grow under the husk of the maize cob. In traditional European and Baltic herbalism these silky strands have been brewed as a mild infusion for generations, and the 35 g pack from Horst offers them in a clean, loose form ready for home preparation.
The active part of corn silk (Stigma maydis) contains a natural mix of flavonoids, potassium salts, plant sterols, small amounts of allantoin and volatile compounds. When you pour hot water over the fibres, these water-soluble substances pass into the infusion and give the tea its characteristic light, slightly sweet, herbaceous taste. In folk practice corn silk tea has traditionally been appreciated by people who want a gentle, plant-based drink with a mild diuretic character — meaning it can softly encourage the body's natural fluid balance during the day.
What makes the Horst version straightforward to use is the format: dried, cut silk in a resealable pack, with no added flavourings, sugar or fillers. One teaspoon (about 2 g) brewed in 200 ml of boiling water and left covered for around 15 minutes gives a light golden infusion. Brewing under a lid matters — it keeps the volatile aromatic compounds in the cup instead of letting them escape with the steam.
This herbal tea may suit adults who enjoy traditional plant infusions and prefer a warm, unsweetened drink with meals instead of coffee or black tea. It fits naturally into a lighter eating pattern and can be a pleasant addition to a kitchen shelf of botanical teas alongside nettle, dandelion or birch leaf.
Please note: corn silk infusion is not a medicine and is not intended to treat any condition. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with known intolerance to maize. If you take prescription medication — especially diuretics, blood pressure or blood sugar treatments — or have a chronic illness, consult your doctor or pharmacist before adding herbal teas to your menu. Keep the pack tightly closed in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
