The Green Side Sea Buckthorn Syrup with Vitamin C is a thick, amber-orange syrup made from sea buckthorn berries (Hippophae rhamnoides) enriched with ascorbic acid. It belongs to the category of healthy foods — somewhere between a fruit syrup, a topping and a vitamin-rich pantry staple. People usually choose it during the cold season, when fresh berries are out of reach and the body welcomes a warming, tangy drink with a recognisable forest aroma.
Sea buckthorn is one of the most studied berries of northern and Baltic tradition. Its bright orange colour comes from carotenoids — natural plant pigments that the body can convert into vitamin A. The berries also naturally contain vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids and organic acids, which give the syrup its characteristic sharp-sweet taste. The added ascorbic acid raises the total vitamin C content and helps stabilise the colour and flavour of the product over its shelf life.
How vitamin C works in the body. Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin that contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to collagen formation for healthy skin and blood vessels, and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It is not stored in the body, so a regular dietary intake matters — especially in autumn and winter, after intense physical activity, or when fresh fruit and vegetables are scarce on the plate.
How to enjoy the syrup. Stir a spoonful into hot or cold water for a quick berry drink, add it to herbal tea once it has cooled slightly (very high heat reduces vitamin C), or pour it over porridge, pancakes, yoghurt, cottage cheese, ice cream and desserts. It also works as a natural sweet-sour accent in salad dressings and marinades, and gives a beautiful colour to homemade lemonades and cocktails.
A few practical notes: the syrup contains sugars naturally present in fruit syrups, so people watching their carbohydrate intake should dose it mindfully. Sea buckthorn is acidic and may not suit those with sensitive stomachs, reflux or known allergy to the berry. It is a food product, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent any disease. Keep refrigerated after opening and use within the period stated on the label.
