Befungin is a classic Russian food supplement product providing a concentrated aqueous extract of chaga (Inonotus obliquus) — a sterile conk (canker) parasitic fungus that grows on the birch trees of the boreal forests of northern Russia, Siberia, Scandinavia and Canada. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) has one of the most complex natural polyphenol compositions of any known fungal organism; its characteristic dark, charred-looking outer layer accumulates melanin pigments and a rich matrix of triterpenoids, polysaccharides (including beta-glucans), phenolic compounds, betulin and betulinic acid (derived from the birch host), inotodiol and ergosterol. Befungin is produced by aqueous alcohol-free extraction of dried chaga biomass to yield a concentrated liquid extract, supplied in a 100 ml glass bottle with a dropper stopper. Before use, the bottle contents are shaken and the extract is diluted with water. The product has a characteristic dark-brown to black colour and a mild, slightly earthy and bitter taste.
