Because this product consists of 100% whole dried milk thistle seeds rather than a powdered extract or capsule, the active compounds need to be released through physical preparation. The seeds have a hard outer shell, so simply steeping them whole in hot water for a few minutes will result in a very weak infusion. To get the most out of the flavolignans, such as silymarin, you should first crush or grind the seeds using a coffee grinder, mortar and pestle, or a heavy rolling pin. Breaking the seeds open exposes the inner contents to water or oil.
