The optimum water temperature for filling a rubber hot-water bottle is no higher than 60–70 °C. Water that is too hot (boiling) creates excess pressure inside the body, speeds up the ageing of the rubber and increases the risk of a burn if it touches the skin by accident. Warm but not scalding water gives a sufficiently long heat effect and is safer to handle.
A 2-litre bottle is large enough to cover a wide area — for example the lower back, the stomach or the shoulder area — and flexible enough to fit snugly against the body. The flexible rubber body adapts to the shape of the body, so the heat is spread more evenly than from a rigid heat source.
Rubber is a material that is sensitive to storage conditions. To stop the bottle cracking and losing its tightness before its time, it is important to follow a few rules.
