Because this is a direct dye that deposits pigment without lifting your natural melanin, the starting base determines everything. On hair that has been lightened to a very pale blonde (level 9–10), the yellow shows as a clear, saturated tone — think lemon or golden yellow depending on how long you leave it on. On natural white or grey hair the pigment lays down evenly and can look quite intense, almost like a highlighter yellow if the hair is porous. On darker blonde or light brown hair you will not get a true yellow; instead the pigment adds warm, golden reflective highlights that catch the light. On medium to dark brown the effect is barely visible, maybe a slight warmth in sunlight. If your hair is unevenly lightened — for example, roots darker than ends — the colour will take differently on each section, so a strand test on a hidden piece is the only reliable way to preview the result.
As a semi-permanent direct dye, the pigment sits on and just under the cuticle rather than inside the cortex, so it gradually rinses out with every wash. Most people see noticeable colour for 4–8 shampoos, but this varies widely. Highly porous hair (often from previous bleaching) grabs more pigment initially and can hold the tone longer, yet it may also release it faster if the cuticle stays open. Sulphate-heavy shampoos, hot water, frequent heat styling, and UV exposure all accelerate fading. To extend the life of the tone: wash with cool water, use a sulphate-free shampoo formulated for coloured hair, limit heat tools, and consider a colour-depositing conditioner in a matching yellow or gold shade for top-ups between full applications. Chlorinated pool water and sea salt also strip pigment quickly, so rinse hair immediately after swimming.
Direct dyes are gentler than oxidative colour, but pre-lightened hair is still fragile. Keratin is a protein that temporarily fills gaps in the cuticle, making the surface feel smoother and helping the pigment deposit more evenly — this reduces the patchy look that can happen on damaged ends. Vitamin E (tocopherol) acts as an antioxidant in the formula itself, stabilising the pigment blend and offering some protection against oxidative stress from environmental exposure after rinsing. Linseed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids; it coats the hair shaft, adding slip and gloss while reducing the dry, straw-like texture common after bleaching. Together these ingredients mean the hair usually feels softer and looks shinier immediately after rinsing compared to a plain pigment-only toner. They do not repair broken bonds or permanently change hair structure — think of them as a conditioning boost that supports the colour result.
A patch test checks for allergic sensitivity. Apply a small amount behind the ear or on the inner forearm, leave for the time stated in the leaflet (usually 30–45 minutes), then watch for 48 hours. Do this before your very first application, and repeat if you’ve had any skin reactions to hair colour in the past, if you’ve changed medication, or if you have a known sensitivity to cosmetic ingredients. A strand test is different — it previews the colour result. Take a thin hidden section, apply the product exactly as you would for the full head, process for the intended time, rinse, and dry. This is essential when your base colour has shifted (new regrowth, further lightening, previous toner), when hair porosity has changed (recent bleach, chemical treatment, or heavy protein/moisture treatments), or when you want to fine-tune the processing time for a softer or stronger yellow. Skipping the strand test is the most common reason for unexpected results.
The pigment particles are designed to adhere to keratin, so they will also cling to skin, cotton, microfibre, and unsealed bathroom surfaces. During application, wear the supplied gloves (or nitrile gloves) and apply a barrier cream or petroleum jelly along the hairline, ears, and neck to catch drips. If pigment gets on skin, wipe immediately with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water — the longer it sits, the more it stains. Rinse the hair in a stainless-steel or porcelain sink rather than a white acrylic tub; if you must use a light-coloured basin, rinse it straight away with a bathroom cleaner. For the first 2–3 washes, use dark towels and an old pillowcase, as colour transfer is highest while the cuticle is still settling. Once the excess pigment has washed out (usually after 2–3 shampoos), transfer risk drops dramatically, but sweaty workouts or rain can still cause minor rub-off on light fabrics.
