Vitamin A exists in two main forms: preformed retinol (of animal origin) and beta-carotene, a plant precursor that the body itself converts into retinol as needed. It is this mechanism that makes beta-carotene a fundamentally different way of getting vitamin A.
The main dietary sources of beta-carotene are orange and dark green vegetables and fruit: carrots, pumpkin, spinach, broccoli, apricots. When there is less of them in the diet — for example in winter or during periods of frequent travel and business trips — the supplement can be a convenient way to maintain the usual intake of carotenoids.
Beta-carotene is a fat-soluble compound, like vitamin A in the form of retinol. If you already take a multivitamin or separate supplements containing vitamin A or other carotenoids, it is worth checking the total amount coming from all sources.
