Beta-carotene is a fat-soluble compound, like vitamin A in the form of retinol. If you already take a multivitamin or separate supplements containing vitamin A or other carotenoids, it is worth checking the total amount coming from all sources.
The combination of beta-carotene with preformed retinol deserves particular attention: both ultimately affect the level of vitamin A in the body, and taking them together without taking the doses into account can lead to an excessive intake of a fat-soluble vitamin. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, the excess of fat-soluble ones is not removed as easily.
If you take antioxidant formulas with vitamins C and E, beta-carotene is often included in such regimens — carotenoids fit well into antioxidant support. However, specific combinations and doses are best discussed with a specialist, especially if you take medicines or have chronic diseases.
As a general rule, before adding a new nutrient to an existing regimen, it is useful to make a list of everything you already take and check for overlaps in composition.
