Peppermint essential oil is highly concentrated and must never be applied undiluted to the skin. For body use — such as a post-activity massage or on areas prone to excess sebum — aim for a 1–2% dilution: roughly 1–2 drops of essential oil per 5 ml (one teaspoon) of carrier oil like jojoba, grapeseed, or sweet almond oil. The oil gives a light, toning effect on greasy or shiny skin, which comes from menthol's cooling action and the oil's astringent quality; this makes it a common choice for diluted blends targeting oily zones on the body.
For a typical ceramic or ultrasonic aroma lamp holding about 100 ml of water, 3–5 drops of peppermint essential oil is a good starting point. The scent is penetrating; you can always add another drop if the room feels too faint, but overdoing it creates a sharp, menthol-heavy air that some find irritating, especially in small or poorly ventilated spaces. Run the lamp for 30–60 minutes at a time rather than continuously.
Peppermint essential oil's two key constituents — menthol and menthone — are volatile and oxidize when exposed to heat, light, and air. Oxidation diminishes the characteristic cooling sensation and fresh aroma, and can produce skin-sensitizing byproducts. To preserve quality, store the 10 ml bottle upright, cap firmly closed, in a cool, dark place such as a drawer or cabinet away from radiators, windows, and direct sunlight. An ideal temperature range is 15–20°C; avoid bathroom storage where humidity and temperature fluctuate.
